Vasopressin, also known as antidiuretic hormone (ADH), is a nonapeptide synthesized in the hypothalamus. Because the human hormone contains arginine, it is specifically called arginine vasopressin (AVP) to distinguish it from analogs ( fig. 1 ).

The hypothalamic-neurohypophyseal system functions to maintain plasma osmolality within narrow limits. It also is an important mechanism in maintaining normal body fluid volume. The system exerts its influence via release or inhibition of vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone, ADH) which acts on the kid … Vasopressin is used to manage anti-diuretic hormone deficiency.

Vasopressin (also called antidiuretic hormone) plays a role in regulating the circadian rhythm — the periods of sleepiness and wakefulness in a 24-hour cycle.

Vasopressin (arginine vasopressin, AVP; antidiuretic hormone, ADH) is a peptide hormone formed in the hypothalamus, then transported via axons to the posterior pituitary, which releases it into the blood. AVP has two principle sites of action: the kidney and blood vessels.

Vasopressin stimulates a family of arginine vasopressin (AVP) receptors, oxytocin receptors, and purinergic receptors (Russell 2011). Vasopressin, at therapeutic doses used for vasodilatory shock, stimulates the AVPR1a (or V1) receptor and increases systemic vascular resistance and mean arterial blood pressure; in response to these effects, a Vasopressin, otherwise known as Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH), has roles in water balance and blood pressure, but it’s also sought after as a smart drug. This post reveals the roles of vasopressin, health implications of high/low levels, and factors that impact secretion. The most important stimuli that evoke vasopressin release are increased plasma osmolality, decreased arterial pressure, and reduced cardiac filling, i.e. , decreased blood volume.5Therefore, vasopressin, like adrenergic agonists or renin/angiotensin, can be considered a stress hormone, acting to maintain homeostasis and milieu intérieur.
